Persian Tense Exercises: 50 Fill-in-the-Blank Sentences for Past, Present & Future

Persian tenses are simpler than English in some ways. no "I have been going" nonsense. but they still trip learners up. The main issue isn’t understanding each tense in isolation. It’s choosing the right one when you’re in the middle of a sentence, in real time, with context clues flying past.

These 50 fill-in-the-blank sentences force you to read the context and pick the correct tense. We cover five core tenses: present simple, past simple, present perfect, present continuous, and future. Each sentence gives you the infinitive. you conjugate it in the right tense based on the clues.

If you need a refresher on how each tense works before starting, read my Farsi verb conjugation guide, my past tense breakdown, or my present tense guide. And for more targeted verb practice, try my verb conjugation exercises.

The Five Tenses You Need

Quick reference before you start:

1. Present Simple. می + present stem + personal ending
می‌خورم (mikhoram). I eat (habitually)

2. Past Simple. past stem + personal ending
خوردم (khordam). I ate

3. Present Perfect. past participle + بودن conjugation
خورده‌ام (khorde-am). I have eaten

4. Present Continuous (Progressive). دارم + present simple
دارم می‌خورم (dâram mikhoram). I am eating (right now)

5. Future. می‌خواهم + subjunctive (or خواهم + past participle in very formal)
می‌خواهم بخورم (mikhâham bekhoram). I will eat / I’m going to eat

In spoken Persian, future is almost always میخوام (mikhâm) + subjunctive: میخوام بخورم (mikhâm bekhoram).

QuestionTense
Is this a habit, routine, or general truth?Present Simple
Did it happen and finish in the past?Past Simple
Did it happen in the past but is relevant now?Present Perfect
Is it happening right now, at this moment?Present Continuous
Will it happen later?Future (mikhâham + subjunctive)
Was it happening when something else interrupted?Past Continuous (dâshtam + imperfect)

Spoken vs. Formal: The Big Differences by Tense

Present Simple: Verb endings shorten. می‌خورم stays میخورم, but می‌خوردمیخوره.

Past Simple: Mostly the same in both registers. Third person plural خوردندخوردن.

Present Perfect: This is where spoken Persian diverges most. The auxiliary drops, making it look identical to past simple: خورده‌امخوردم. Context is everything.

Continuous: Same structure, just shorter endings on داشتن: داردداره.

Future: می‌خواهممیخوام. The subjunctive verb also shortens: برومبرم.

What’s Next?

Fifty sentences is a solid workout, but tenses need ongoing practice. especially the present perfect vs. past simple distinction that trips everyone up.

FAQ

How many tenses does Persian have?

Persian has about 8-10 tenses depending on how you count, but for everyday conversation you need five: present simple, past simple, present perfect, present continuous, and future. These five cover 95% of what you’ll say and hear in real Persian conversation.

How do you form the future tense in Persian?

Persian future uses می‌خواهم (mikhâham. I want) + the subjunctive form of the main verb. So “I will go” = می‌خواهم بروم (mikhâham beravam). In spoken Persian this shortens to میخوام برم (mikhâm beram). There’s also a very formal future (خواهم رفت) but it’s almost never used in conversation.

What’s the difference between past simple and present perfect in Persian?

Past simple (خوردم. khordam. I ate) describes a completed past action. Present perfect (خورده‌ام. khorde-am. I have eaten) describes a past action with present relevance. The tricky part: in spoken Persian, present perfect often looks identical to past simple because the auxiliary verb drops out. Context determines meaning.

How does the continuous tense work in Persian?

Persian continuous uses داشتن (dâshtan. to have) as a helper verb before the main verb in present simple form. “I am eating” = دارم می‌خورم (dâram mikhoram). For past continuous: داشتم می‌خوردم (dâshtam mikhordam. I was eating). The helper verb داشتن must match the subject.

Are Persian verb tenses harder than English?

In many ways, Persian tenses are simpler. There’s no equivalent of “I have been eating” or “I will have been going.” Persian uses fewer tenses to express the same ideas. The main challenge for English speakers is the different word order (verb at the end) and the fact that spoken Persian collapses some tense distinctions that formal Persian keeps separate.
