What it means
دانشگاه (dâneshgâh) means “university” in Persian. It is a compound of دانش (dânesh, “knowledge”) and the suffix گاه (gâh, “place”). Literally, “a place of knowledge.”

Pair
دانشگاه is a Pure Persian coinage that replaced older Arabic-origin academic vocabulary such as مدرسه عالیه (madrese-ye âliye, “high school”) and جامعه (jâme’e), once used for “university” under Arabic-Persian convention. The Farhangestan introduced دانشگاه in the early 20th century during the foundation of the University of Tehran (1934). The full Pure Persian academic family also includes دانشجو (student), دانشکده (faculty/college), and دانشآموز (school pupil).
Cultural note
دانشگاه تهران (University of Tehran), founded in 1934, is the country’s flagship institution; its main gate near Enqelab Square is a recurring backdrop in Iranian films and protests. Admission to top universities runs through کنکور (konkur), the brutal national entrance exam taken by over a million high school students each year. The compound structure of دانشگاه (knowledge + place) is a model the Farhangestan still uses to coin new technical terms.
