What it means
یک (yek) means “one.” It is the cardinal number 1, but it also doubles as Persian’s indefinite article (“a, an”). In casual speech it often shrinks to ye (یه): ye ketâb, “a book.”
How to use it
- یک نفر (yek nafar) “one person”
- یک تا سیب (yek tâ sib) “one apple”
- ساعت یک (sâ’at-e yek) “one o’clock”
How counters work
Persian counts with the pattern: number + classifier + noun. The classifier is usually تا for general objects. So “two books” is do tâ ketâb, not do ketâb. People take نفر, books often take جلد, and yek is the start of every count: yek tâ, yek nafar, yek jeld. Note the noun stays singular after a number, even “five books” is panj tâ ketâb (singular ketâb).
Cultural note
Yek shows up everywhere: yek lahze (“one moment”), yek dune (“just one piece,” said when a parent rations sweets), yek joor-i (“some kind of, weirdly”). The colloquial ye is so common that writing yek in a text message feels stiff, like typing “one” instead of “a” in English.
