خوب
Meaning
معنیخوب is native Persian, traceable to Old Persian *huwāp- ("of good work, accomplished"). The native root survives across modern Iranian languages: Kurdish "xweş," Pashto "ښه" (kha). The word's reach as a conversational filler is striking. Iranians say "خوب" the way Americans say "well" or "okay": as a sentence-opener that buys a moment to think, or a transition that signals the speaker is moving on. In writing, خوب stays an adjective. In speech, it carries half the conversational glue. Pair it with خوشحال (happy) and you have most of the positive emotional vocabulary an Iranian friend will use about you. The phrase "خوب, پس..." (okay, so...) opens hundreds of Iranian conversations every day, the way "well, so..." opens English ones. It is not a meaningful statement on its own, but a piece of conversational scaffolding that signals the speaker is about to make a point.
