What it means
تهران (tehrân) is the capital of Iran, its political center, and its largest city. The metro area sits at the foot of the Alborz mountains in the north of the country.
How to use it
- من تهران زندگی میکنم (man tehrân zendegi mikonam) “I live in Tehran”
- اهل تهرانم (ahl-e tehrânam) “I am from Tehran”
- تهران شلوغه (tehrân sholughe) “Tehran is crowded”
Why it matters
Tehran became the capital under Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar in 1786 and has stayed there since. Modern Tehran is the country’s economic, political, and cultural engine: the parliament, presidency, central bank, and most universities sit here. The northern districts (Tajrish, Niavaran) climb into the mountains, while the south is older and denser. The phrase تهران بزرگ (tehrân-e bozorg) “Greater Tehran” covers the metro region of roughly 16 million.
Cultural note
Tehrani Persian is the prestige spoken dialect, the basis of broadcast media and the form most learners hear. Iranians from other cities tease Tehranis for being rushed and rude; Tehranis tease everyone else for being slow. The city’s air pollution, mountain backdrop, and Friday-afternoon traffic toward شمال (the Caspian coast) are stock topics in any Tehrani conversation.
