Persian Verb Conjugation: 50 Exercises with Answers

Persian verb conjugation worksheet with handwritten answers and small teal checkmarks on a wooden desk

You’ve read the verb conjugation rules. You can recite the personal endings. You even understand the difference between the present stem and the past stem. But when someone asks you a question in Farsi, your brain goes blank and you can’t conjugate رفتن (raftan) fast enough to answer.

That’s normal. Knowing a grammar rule and being able to use it under pressure are completely different skills. The first is knowledge. The second is automaticity. the ability to produce the correct form without conscious thought. Automaticity comes from one thing only: repetitive active practice.

These 50 exercises drill the present tense and simple past tense of the 15 most common Persian verbs. This pairs directly with the verb conjugation guide. read that first if the concepts are new. Then come back here and test yourself.

This is part of the grammar exercises series.

How to Use These Exercises

Write your answer before checking. Seriously. the act of producing the word from memory is where learning happens. Just reading the answer and thinking “I knew that” builds nothing.

Each exercise shows: a sentence in English, the verb in parentheses, and the subject. You produce the conjugated form in Farsi. Answers include both the formal written form and the spoken Tehran form.

The 15 Verbs You’ll Practice

How Did You Score?

  • 40-50 correct: Solid foundation. Move on to ezafe exercises or tense review.
  • 25-39 correct: You know the patterns but need more practice. Redo this set in 3-5 days. Focus on the verbs you got wrong.
  • Under 25: Re-read the conjugation guide, especially the section on present and past stems. Then try again. No shame. this is exactly what practice is for.

What’s Next

Verb conjugation is the engine of Persian grammar. Once you can produce the right form automatically, everything else gets easier. The next exercise set is ezafe practice. Persian’s linking vowel that connects nouns and adjectives.

For the full exercise library organized by level and topic, see the grammar exercises hub.

FAQ

Are Persian verbs regular or irregular?

Almost entirely regular. Once you know the present stem and past stem of a verb, the conjugation pattern applies identically across all persons. There are about 5-6 common verbs with minor irregularities (budan, dâshtan), but nothing like the hundreds of irregular verbs in English or French. Persian verb conjugation is one of the most predictable aspects of the language.

What’s the difference between formal and spoken verb conjugation?

Spoken Tehran Farsi shortens verb endings. Third person -ad becomes -e (mikhoradmikhore). Plural -and becomes -an (mikonandmikonan). Some vowels shift too: âu in certain stems (midânammidunam). The exercises above show both forms.

How many Persian verb tenses do I need to know?

For basic conversation: present simple and past simple cover about 80% of situations. Add the present perfect (raftam vs rafte-am) and the continuous (dâram miram) and you’re at 95%. The subjunctive is important for intermediate level. The other tenses (past perfect, future, habitual past) can wait until B1+.

Why do some Persian verbs have two different stems?

Every Persian verb has a present stem (used for present tense, subjunctive, imperative) and a past stem (used for past tenses, participles). They often look quite different: raftan (to go) has present stem rav- and past stem raft-. This is just how Persian evolved. the two stems come from different historical forms. You need to memorize both, but after the 15 most common verbs, the pattern becomes intuitive.

How can I practice verb conjugation with spaced repetition?

ZabanYar creates verb conjugation flashcards that adapt to your errors. Get a form wrong and it shows up more frequently. Get it right consistently and the interval extends. This is more efficient than redoing the same 50 exercises. the app focuses your time on the specific verbs and persons you actually struggle with.

Fifty exercises. Two tenses. Fifteen verbs. If you got through all of these with 80%+ accuracy, your verb conjugation foundation is solid. Come back in a week and try the ones you missed. spaced practice is how these patterns move from “thing I know” to “thing I do automatically.”

For automated spaced practice that tracks what you get wrong, ZabanYar’s grammar flashcards do exactly this. without you having to manage the schedule yourself.
