What it means
تابستان (tâbestân) means “summer.” The compound breaks down as تاب (heat, glow) plus the seasonal suffix ـستان (place/time of). Foundation A1 noun.
How to use it
- تابستان گرم است (tâbestân garm ast) “summer is hot”
- تابستان امسال (tâbestân-e emsâl) “this year’s summer”
- تعطیلات تابستان (ta’tilât-e tâbestân) “summer holidays”
When it falls
تابستان covers the Iranian months تیر, مرداد, and شهریور, roughly June 22 to September 22. Schools close, تهران empties as families head north to the Caspian or up to mountain villages, and Tehran nights stretch onto rooftops.
Cultural note
For decades, working-class Tehrani families slept on flat rooftops in تابستان to escape indoor heat. Mid-summer brings چلهی تابستان (the forty-day peak), the hottest stretch from late July. Watermelon (هندوانه) and yogurt-mint drinks (دوغ) define the season’s table.
