بودن

/ būdan /
verb  ·  to be, to exist

Meaning

معنی
۱

بودن traces to Old Persian *bav- ("to be, to become"), descending from the Proto-Indo-European root *bʰuH- ("to be"). Same root as English "be," German "bin / bist," Sanskrit "bhū-," Greek "phύsis" (nature, the becoming). The cognate chain is one of the deepest in any language family. Persian's split between the predicative suffixes and existential هست is unusual among Indo-European languages. Most modern European languages handle both functions with one verb: English "is" works for "she is tired" and "there is a problem." Persian forces the split, which makes the predicative suffixes feel more lightweight in everyday use. Some linguists have argued that this split makes Persian's "to be" closer to a copula clitic than a full verb, like Hebrew or Arabic in their nominal sentences.
