What it means
اینجا (injâ) means “here.” It is a spatial deictic adverb, built from the demonstrative این (in, “this”) plus the locative جا (jâ, “place”). Literally: “this place.”
How to use it
- اینجا چیه؟ (injâ chiye?) “What is here? / What is this place?”
- بیا اینجا (biyâ injâ) “Come here”
- اینجا تهرانه (injâ tehrâne) “Here is Tehran / This is Tehran”
- من اینجا زندگی میکنم (man injâ zendegi mikonam) “I live here”
Position in sentence
اینجا usually sits before the verb, like most Persian adverbs of place. In short identifying sentences it can lead the clause: اینجا خونهی منه (injâ khune-ye mane) “this is my house.” With motion verbs it follows the subject and precedes the verb: ما اینجا میمونیم (mâ injâ mimunim) “we are staying here.”
Cultural note
اینجا pairs with آنجا (ânjâ, “there”) and اونجا (unjâ) in spoken Tehrani. Taxi drivers shout همینجا نگهدار (haminjâ negahdâr, “stop right here”) at the exact spot. Adding هم (ham) gives همینجا, which means “right here, this exact spot.”
