What it means
روزنامه (ruzname) is the Persian word for newspaper. The compound is transparent: روز (ruz, day) plus نامه (name, letter, document, written thing). Literally, “a daily writing.” The word covers the physical paper sold at the newsstand and the digital edition on a phone. It does not extend to magazines (those are مجله, majalleh) or to news websites in the abstract sense (those tend to be سایت خبری, sayt-e khabari).
Every Iranian city has a روزنامهفروشی (ruzname-forushi), a small kiosk that sells papers, magazines, lottery tickets, and bus passes. Even as print has shrunk under digital pressure and economic squeeze, the kiosks have not disappeared. Buying a روزنامه in the morning on the way to work is still a habit for a generation of Iranian men.
The real Iranian newspapers
اطلاعات (Etela’at) launched in 1925 and is still publishing, making it Iran’s oldest continuous daily. کیهان (Keyhan), founded 1943, was the country’s most-read paper before the 1979 revolution and is now a state-aligned conservative voice. همشهری (Hamshahri), launched 1992 by the Tehran municipality, sits on the centrist-reformist side and runs the country’s biggest classified-ads section. شرق (Shargh) is the reformist daily that has been shut down and re-licensed multiple times. ایران (Iran) is the official government paper.
Knowing these names matters because Iranians refer to them constantly when discussing politics: “کیهان نوشته که…” (keyhan neveshte ke, Keyhan wrote that) signals a hardline source; “شرق نوشته که…” (shargh neveshte ke) signals a reformist one. The paper is a shorthand for the position.

Where it comes from
Both halves of ruzname are pure Persian. روز (ruz) goes back to Middle Persian rōz and Old Persian raucah, the word for day and for sunlight, cognate with Avestan raocah. نامه (name) is also Middle Persian, from nāmag, meaning a written document or letter, ultimately from the same Indo-European root as Latin nomen. The compound روزنامه appears in classical Persian texts in the sense of “daily record, journal, diary” long before it took on the modern newspaper meaning. The modern sense crystallized in the nineteenth century alongside the Qajar-era press.
In our voice
Newspapers in Iran are a political instrument, not a neutral information utility. Licenses are granted and revoked by the Press Supervisory Board, papers are shut down for crossing red lines, and many of the most interesting reformist editors have done jail time. When an Iranian says “این تو روزنامه نوشت” (in too ruzname nevesht, this was written in the paper), the implied next question is always “کدوم روزنامه؟” (kodum ruzname, which paper).
