فردا

فردا is Old Persian, traceable to *fra-tara- ("in front, ahead"). Persian's whole time grid is built relative to the speaker's position rather than abstract calendar dates: امروز (today, "this day"), دیروز (yesterday, "the gone day"), فردا (tomorrow, "the ahead day"). The proverb "کار فردا را به امروز نکن" reverses the English version. English says don't put off tomorrow's work; Persian says don't rush to do tomorrow's work today. The cultural inflection matters: Iran has a long literary tradition around patience, fate, and pacing, and the proverb embeds that in everyday speech. Khayyam's quatrains repeatedly meditate on the unknown nature of فردا, treating tomorrow as both a hope and a warning. In modern usage, when an Iranian shrugs and says "فردا معلوم می‌شه" (we'll know tomorrow), the phrase carries that whole literary tradition: a quiet acceptance that tomorrow is not yet ours to plan.
