خانه

noun  ·  house, home

Meaning

معنی
۱

In Persian poetry, خانه stops being a structure and becomes the soul. Hafez and Rumi both use it as a metaphor for the inner self, the place a person returns to. In modern usage, "خانه‌ی پدری" (paternal home) carries weight that "childhood home" in English does not. Iranians often inherit and keep the family seat for generations, and visiting it is a ritual, not a stop. Even diaspora Iranians refer to it constantly. The word also marks where you are emotionally: "می‌خوام برم خونه" (I want to go home) rarely just means the building. The Old Persian root *dam- (related to Latin "domus" and English "domestic") survived in poetic Persian as دم, but خانه took over in everyday use, eventually becoming the productive root for compound words across architecture, profession, and metaphor.
