5 Easy Persian Passages for A2 Learners (With Vocabulary)

When I started teaching Farsi online, every student hit the same wall at about month three: they could conjugate verbs, they had 200 words memorized, but they’d never read a paragraph of connected Persian text. The jump from flashcard sentences to actual reading felt like jumping from a puddle into the sea.

These five passages are the puddle-to-pool bridge. Each one uses only the 300 most common Persian words, simple present and past tense, and short sentences. They’re about everyday topics. things you’d actually talk about. so the vocabulary is immediately useful.

This is part of the reading practice series. If you can’t read Persian script yet, start with the alphabet guide.

How to Use These Passages

  1. Read the passage in Persian script first. Don’t check the vocabulary list yet.
  2. Underline words you don’t know.
  3. Re-read, trying to guess unknown words from context.
  4. Check the vocabulary list.
  5. Read one more time. it should feel easier now.
  6. Answer the comprehension questions without looking back.

What’s Next

If these passages felt comfortable (80%+ comprehension on first read), move up to Persian fables for more narrative complexity, or try reading a restaurant menu for practical real-world text.

If they felt challenging, that’s the right difficulty. Come back tomorrow and re-read the ones you struggled with. you’ll be surprised how much easier they feel the second time. The grammar reference helps if specific structures confused you.

FAQ

What vocabulary level do I need for these passages?

These passages use approximately the 300 most common Persian words. If you’ve completed an A1-A2 course or studied Farsi for 2-3 months with regular vocabulary practice, you should recognize most words. The vocabulary tables below each passage cover the words that might be new to A2 learners.

Should I read these passages in formal or spoken Persian?

These passages are written in formal/written Persian (ketabi) because that’s what you’ll encounter in most written text. When reading aloud, you can practice both. read the formal version as written, then try converting key phrases to spoken forms. For example, می‌روم (miravam) becomes میرم (miram) in speech.

How many times should I read each passage?

At least twice. First read for general meaning (don’t stop to look up words). Second read with the vocabulary list to fill gaps. A third read the next day reinforces retention. If you’re practicing reading speed, time yourself on the first and third reads. you should be noticeably faster the third time.

Can I use these passages to practice writing?

Yes. try writing responses to the comprehension questions in Persian. Or write a similar passage about yourself (Passage 1), your city (Passage 2), or your family (Passage 3). Using the same structure with your own content is one of the most effective ways to move from reading comprehension to active writing.

Where can I find more easy Persian reading material?

After these passages, try Persian fables (A2) or restaurant menus (A2-B1) on this site. For external resources, Iranian children’s magazines (like Roshd) and simplified news from Radio Farda’s “Simple Farsi” section are good. Avoid raw news or social media until B1. the vocabulary jump is steep.

Five passages. Five topics you can actually talk about. Reading connected text in Farsi for the first time feels slow and frustrating. that’s not failure, it’s the feeling of a new neural pathway being built. Come back tomorrow and read them again. They’ll be easier. That’s how this works. For more graded reading material, Wikipedia’s overview of Persian literature gives useful context on the tradition you’re stepping into.
