بیست

Bist carries a specific cultural meaning that every Iranian recognizes instantly: it's the perfect score. Iranian schools and universities grade on a 20-point scale, where 20 is full marks. The phrase بیست گرفتم (bist gereftam), "I got twenty," means "I got a perfect score," and it's the answer every student dreams of giving when a parent asks about an exam. By extension, بیست شد (bist shod) or بیسته (biste), "it's a twenty," became casual slang for "this is excellent, top quality, full marks," applied to anything from a meal to a performance to a haircut. A friend tries on a new shirt: bist! A waiter brings the tea exactly hot enough: bist! The expression spread from school playgrounds into adult speech and now functions as one of the most natural compliments in spoken Persian. Birthdays use the ordinal form: tavalod-e bist-om-am, "my 20th birthday," a milestone treated with as much weight in Iranian families as the 18th or 21st elsewhere. The number also reaches into Iranian school folklore through the joke that بیست only exists in textbooks and never on actual report cards, since teachers are notoriously stingy with the perfect score. And in marriage and dowry talk, بیست تا سکه (bist tâ sekke), "twenty gold coins," is a baseline amount in the مهریه (mehriye, marriage payment) negotiated between families, though urban couples now treat the figure with various levels of seriousness.
