پدر
Meaning
معنیپدر traces to Proto-Indo-European *ph₂tér, one of the oldest reconstructed words in the language family. Same root behind Latin "pater" (paternal, paternity, patrimony, patron, patriot, expatriate), Greek "patēr," Sanskrit "pitṛ," English "father." The cognate chain stretches across thousands of years and tens of thousands of kilometers. In Iranian culture, the father has historically held the role of family head, though modern Iranian society has shifted considerably toward shared parental authority. The traditional phrase نانآور خانواده (nān-āvar-e khānevādeh, "the bread-bringer of the family") refers to the father as primary breadwinner. Father's Day (روز پدر) coincides with the birthday of Imam Ali, the central figure of Shi'a Islam. The day is observed nationally even by non-religious Iranians who treat it as a family celebration.
