What it means
اصفهان (esfahân) is a major city in central Iran and the capital of Isfahan Province. It served as the Safavid imperial capital from 1598 under Shah Abbas I.

Why it matters
Shah Abbas moved the Safavid capital here in 1598 and built میدان نقش جهان (Naqsh-e Jahan Square), one of the largest urban squares in the world, ringed by the Shah Mosque, Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque, and the Ali Qapu palace. Modern Isfahan is a center of steel, aerospace, and handicrafts (miniature painting, enameling, carpets). The Zayanderud river and its arched bridges (Si-o-se-pol, Khaju) define the city’s evening social life.
Cultural note
Isfahanis carry a reputation in Iran for sharp business sense and wry humor, the subject of countless gentle jokes. The Isfahani dialect has its own intonation, mocked and imitated affectionately across the country. The phrase نصف جهان was coined by visitors who saw the Safavid capital at its peak; locals still wear it without irony.
