What it means
مسجد (masjed) means “mosque”, Islamic place of worship. Arabic loanword, A1 vocabulary, sacred register. The English word “mosque” derives from the same Arabic root via Spanish mezquita.

Religious context
From Arabic مسجد (masjid), the noun of place from سجد (sajada, “to prostrate”), root س ج د. Literally “the place of prostration.” Persian Iran is famous for some of Islam’s most beautiful mosques: مسجد شیخ لطفالله (Sheikh Lotfollah Mosque) in Isfahan with its peacock-tail dome, مسجد امام (Imam Mosque) in Isfahan, and the gold-domed مسجد گوهرشاد (Goharshad Mosque) in Mashhad. Tile mosaic, calligraphy, and the geometric muqarnas vaults define Persian-Islamic architectural heritage.
