What it means
یه (ye) means “a,” “an,” or “one.” It is the spoken Tehrani contraction of یک (yek), used as an indefinite article and as the number one in casual speech.
How to use it
- یه چای میخوام (ye chây mikhâm) “I want a tea”
- یه دوست دارم (ye dust dâram) “I have a friend”
- یه لحظه (ye lahze) “one moment”
- یه چیزی بگم (ye chizi begam) “let me say something”
Formal pair
Spoken: یه (ye). Written or formal: یک (yek). In a newspaper article you will always see yek. In a friend’s text message you will almost always see ye. The two are interchangeable in meaning, only register differs.
Cultural note
Ye also opens countless storytelling phrases. یه روز (ye ruz), “one day,” begins thousands of childhood tales. The classic Persian folktale opener یکی بود یکی نبود (yeki bud yeki nabud), “once there was, once there wasn’t,” preserves the older yek for fairy-tale gravity. In daily speech, ye wins.
