Ezafe Practice: 30 Exercises for Persian's Trickiest Feature

Ezafe is the sound that holds Persian nouns together. It's an unstressed -e (or -ye after vowels) that links nouns to adjectives, nouns to other nouns, and nouns to possessors. کتاب خوب isn't "book good". it's ketâb-e khub, with an invisible ezafe bridging them. Miss it and you sound choppy. Overuse it and you sound confused.

The rule is simple: ezafe connects a noun to whatever modifies it. The challenge is producing it automatically in speech and recognizing where it belongs in unfamiliar phrases. These 30 exercises drill exactly that.

Key pattern: Notice exercise 5. ماشین پدر من has TWO ezafes: mâshin-e pedar-e man. Each noun links to the next via ezafe. Chain as many as you need: dar-e otâgh-e khâne-ye pedar-e man = the door of the room of my father's house.

Ezafe is a tiny sound that carries enormous weight. Getting it right makes your Farsi flow; getting it wrong makes it stutter.
