آبی

آبی is the color of water, sky, and one of Tehran’s two football clubs. The word tells you what it is built from.

What it actually means

آبی (âbi) means “blue.” The word is transparently built from آب (âb, “water”) plus the adjective suffix ی-, so آبی literally means “water-colored.” Persian uses آبی for the full blue range: the sky (آسمان آبی), the sea (دریای آبی), blue jeans (شلوار جین آبی), a blue car (ماشین آبی). For darker shades Iranians say سرمه‌ای (sormei, “navy”) or آبی تیره (âbi-ye tire, “dark blue”); for lighter shades آبی روشن (âbi-ye roshan, “light blue”) or فیروزه‌ای (firuze-i, “turquoise”).

How to use it

آبی is a regular adjective. It comes after the noun, linked by ezafe in formal writing or simply attached in spoken Persian:

• ماشین آبی (mâshin-e âbi) “the blue car”
• چشم‌های آبی (cheshm-hâ-ye âbi) “blue eyes”
• پیراهن آبی (pirâhan-e âbi) “a blue shirt”

The comparative is آبی‌تر (âbi-tar, “bluer”); superlative آبی‌ترین (âbi-tarin, “the bluest”). Both are used mostly figuratively rather than literally.

Cultural context

In Tehran, آبی is shorthand for one of two things: the football club Esteghlal (استقلال) and its supporters, who wear blue and are known collectively as آبی‌ها (âbi-hâ, “the Blues”). The other major Tehran club, Persepolis (پرسپولیس), wears red and its fans are called سرخ‌ها (sorkh-hâ, “the Reds”). The Tehran derby between the two is one of the loudest fixtures in Asian football. “من آبی هستم” (I’m blue) and “من سرخ هستم” (I’m red) are not literal statements about color preference; they are tribal declarations. آبی also has a calmer cultural register: in Persian poetry and design the color is associated with the dome tiles of mosques, especially the Isfahan school, where firuze-blue and lapis-blue dominate. The color is calm, contemplative, and associated with water and mercy in Sufi imagery.
