استوری کردن (story-kardan) means to post an Instagram story, the 24-hour ephemeral format that has become the primary public-facing layer of Iranian social media. Iranians do not just post stories. They story their lunch, their commute, their political frustration, their breakup, their wedding, their dog. The verb specifically refers to the Story feature, not regular posts.

There is no Pure Persian alternative because the noun استوری names a specific platform feature with no native equivalent. The closest paraphrase is استوری گذاشتن (story gozāshtan, to put up a story), which is slightly more common in writing. In casual speech, استوری کردن and استوری گذاشتن coexist with no meaningful difference.

Compound verb structure

Story-kardan follows the dominant pattern: invariant English noun استوری plus light verb کردن. The action is durative (composing and publishing a story takes time), so کردن fits over زدن.

The cultural weight of stories in Iran

Stories are the Iranian internet’s town square. Political opinions, mourning posts, protest footage, restaurant recommendations, daily-life proof-of-life all run through stories because they vanish in 24 hours and feel less archived than feed posts. During the Mahsa Amini protests in 2022 and 2023, Iranian Instagram stories became the primary documentary medium of the movement, sometimes the only one reaching outside the country in real time. Story-kardan was not a casual verb in that period; it was a political act.

Where it comes from

Story is English, naturalized into Persian through Instagram’s introduction of the Story feature in 2016. کردن is native Persian. The verb spread across Iran in roughly two years after the feature launched and is now used by speakers across every age group.
