What it means
ریل (ril) is the Persian word for an Instagram reel, the short vertical video format that took over social feeds around 2020. The word is a straight transliteration of the English. Iranians under 35 use it constantly, both as a noun (یک ریل دیدم, yek ril didam, I saw a reel) and folded into verbs like ریل گذاشتن (ril gozashtan, to post a reel) and ریل ساختن (ril sakhtan, to make a reel). It covers the TikTok-style video on any platform: Instagram reels, YouTube Shorts, the short clips on Telegram channels and Aparat. Most Iranians do not distinguish by platform; everything short and vertical is a ril.
How to use it
The word lives in casual speech and captions. It does not appear in formal writing or news copy, where editors still reach for ویدیوی کوتاه (video-ye kutah, short video) or فیلم کوتاه (film-e kutah, short film). In conversation, ril is the only word anyone uses.

The generation marker
This word splits Iranians by age. Anyone born after 1990 uses ril without thinking. Their parents and older relatives say فیلم کوتاه (film-e kutah) or just کلیپ (klip, clip), the older loan from the music-video era of the 1990s. If you hear someone over 50 saying ril, they usually picked it up from a grandchild and are still trying it on. The opposite, a 22-year-old saying film-kutah for a reel, sounds like a translation exercise from a Farsi class. Listening for this word is one of the fastest ways to place a speaker’s age inside the first minute of a conversation.
Where it sits in the tech vocabulary
Ril is one piece of a larger pattern. Iranian internet Persian has absorbed the English platform vocabulary almost untouched: story, post, like, follow, direct. The Farhangestan, the official body for Pure Persian alternatives, has not produced replacements that anyone uses for these. The vocabulary of the phone is English-shaped, with Persian grammar wrapped around it. Ril is the rule, not the exception.
