What it means
استوری (estori) is a direct loanword from English “story” and refers to the 24-hour ephemeral photo or video posts that appear at the top of apps like Instagram and Snapchat. Persian phonology does not permit words to begin with a consonant cluster, so the initial “st” of “story” is broken up by adding a prothetic vowel at the start, producing estori. The plural is استوریها (estorihâ) in casual speech. There is no widely used native Persian equivalent: the word داستان (dâstân, story/narrative) carries a completely different meaning and is not used for this feature.
How to use it
- استوریت رو دیدم. (Estorit ro didam.) “I saw your story.”
- یه استوری گذاشتم. (Ye estori gozâshtam.) “I posted a story.”
- چرا استوری نمیذاری؟ (Cherâ estori nemizâri?) “Why aren’t you posting stories?”
- استوریاش خیلی باحاله. (Estoriâsh kheyli bâhâle.) “Her stories are really fun.”
Cultural note
Instagram stories became one of the most active social formats in Iran, particularly among younger Iranians. Despite government restrictions on access to Instagram at various times, many users have continued through VPNs, and the platform’s story format is deeply embedded in everyday digital communication. Persian influencers, small businesses, and ordinary users all use استوری as the default word, and it appears regularly in Persian-language media coverage of social platforms. No official Persian tech body has introduced a replacement term that has caught on.
