What it means
آرشیو کردن (ârshiv kardan) means “to archive” something, and in everyday digital Persian it almost always refers to the Instagram feature that lets you hide a post from your profile grid without deleting it permanently. The word آرشیو (ârshiv) entered Persian through French archive, which itself came from Latin archivum and ultimately Greek archeion. It pairs with the Persian light verb کردن (kardan, to do or to make) to form the compound verb. The archived post moves to a private section only you can see, and you can restore it at any time. A related but distinct term is حذف کردن (hazf kardan), which means to delete permanently.
How to use it
- اون پستو آرشیو کردم چون خجالتآور بود. (oon posto ârshiv kardam chon khejâlatâvar bood.) “I archived that post because it was embarrassing.”
- میخوام پستهای قدیمیمو آرشیو کنم. (mikhâm post-hâye ghadimimo ârshiv konam.) “I want to archive my old posts.”
- پستو پاک نکردم، فقط آرشیوش کردم. (posto pâk nakardam, faghat ârshivash kardam.) “I did not delete the post, I just archived it.”
- از آرشیوم درش آوردم و دوباره پاستش کردم. (az ârshivam darash âvordam va dobâre pâstash kardam.) “I pulled it out of my archive and reposted it.”
Cultural note
Archiving on Instagram became a widely used social move among Iranian users after the platform introduced the feature in 2017. Young Iranians often archive posts from a previous relationship, a past aesthetic phase, or an older period of their life without fully erasing the record. The distinction between آرشیو کردن and حذف کردن matters because archiving is reversible, which suits a culture where public image management is taken seriously but where people also want to preserve a private memory of what they shared.
