اسپم زدن pronounced by Elyar

What it means

اسپم زدن (spam-zadan) means to spam someone, to send unsolicited mass DMs or messages, the kind of action that gets your account flagged on Instagram or your number reported on WhatsApp. The verb covers both technical spam (a bot mass-DMing) and human spam (a person copy-pasting the same pickup line to forty matches on Tinder).

The register is colloquial. The connotation is negative. Calling someone an اسپم زن (spam-zan, a spammer) is an insult.

Compound verb structure

اسپم زدن uses the light verb زدن (zadan, to hit, to strike) rather than کردن (kardan, to do). Persian uses زدن for actions that are sharp, percussive, or single-event in feel: تگ زدن (tag-zadan, to tag), هشتگ زدن (hashtag-zadan, to hashtag), اسکرین شات زدن (screenshot-zadan, to screenshot), زنگ زدن (zang-zadan, to ring, to call). Spam fits this template because each spam message is one hit, repeated.

  • Present: من اسپم می‌زنم (man spam mizanam), تو اسپم می‌زنی (to spam mizani)
  • Past: اسپم زدم (spam zadam, I spammed)
  • Subjunctive: که اسپم بزنم (ke spam bezanam)
  • Negation: اسپم نزدم (spam nazadam, I did not spam)

The target attaches with به (be): به همه اسپم زد (be hame spam zad, he spammed everyone).

The dating-app pattern

اسپم زدن describes a specific behavior on Iranian dating apps and Instagram. A user (usually a man) sends the same opening line to dozens or hundreds of profiles, hoping a handful will reply. The strategy is wide and shallow, the inverse of putting effort into one good message. On Iranian Tinder, Hamdam (the state-launched Islamic dating app), and Telegram dating channels, اسپم زدن is so common that women have built fast filters for it. A copy-paste opener gets ignored. A line that references the bio gets a reply.

How to use it

aslan be man javab nadeh, hame-i ke dideh shode spam zade.

Do not reply to him at all, he has spammed everyone he has seen.

اصلاً به من جواب نده، همه‌ای که دیده شده اسپم زده.

in account spam mizad, gozaresh-esh kardam.

This account was spamming, I reported it.

این اکانت اسپم می‌زد، گزارشش کردم.

In our voice

اسپم زدن is one of those small verbs that maps a piece of online behavior so clearly that Persian speakers reach for it before any native alternative. The verb is fully integrated, conjugates cleanly, and tells you exactly what is happening: someone is striking inboxes with junk, one after the next, in volume.
