What it means

اسپیم (spim) is what Iranian Gen Z calls junk direct messages: the random Telegram DMs from people you do not follow, the cold pitches from sellers in your Instagram inbox, the bot-blast inviting you to a crypto channel. Spim is spam that arrives in a one-to-one chat window instead of an email folder. The word is newer than اسپم (spam) and noticeably tighter in scope: spam covers everything, spim covers DMs.

The register is B2 internet slang, mostly written, mostly under 30. Older Iranians say پیام مزاحم (payām-e mozāhem, nuisance message) or just اسپم. The Pure Persian Movement has no specific calque for spim; the word slipped in below the radar of official language planning.

Where it comes from

Spim is a blend of spam plus IM (instant messaging). The English coinage dates to the early 2000s, when researchers and tech writers needed a label for the new vector of DM-based abuse. The word never broke out into mainstream English use; spam swallowed it. Iranian Gen Z picked it up some years later through tech-adjacent communities and treated it as a fresh, useful label distinct from spam. The path is loose, exact transmission is hard to trace, and the coinage feels organic, the kind of word that resurfaces in a new language because the gap it fills is real.

When to use it

Spim works in casual writing among young, online Iranians. In speech it sounds tech-fluent; outside that crowd, default to اسپم or پیام مزاحم. Do not use it with anyone over 40 unless you want a follow-up question about what you just said. The word is a marker of an internet-native register, useful for the same reason every slang marker is useful: it tells the listener which world you live in.
