What it means
تگ زدن (tag-zadan) means to tag someone in a photo, a post, or a comment, linking them to the content so they receive a notification and appear attached to it. Iranians تگ میزنند friends in vacation photos, partners in wedding posts, businesses they want to recommend, anyone they want to drag into a conversation.
The Pure Persian Movement option is برچسب زدن (barchasb-zadan, to apply a label, native Persian compound) for offline label-attaching. Online, no one says برچسب for the Instagram action. The English root تگ has fully replaced any native option in the social-media context.
Compound verb structure
Tag-zadan uses زدن (zadan, to hit, to strike) rather than کردن. Persian sorts compound-verb light verbs by aspectual shape: tagging is a one-instant gesture, like ringing or stamping, so it pairs with the same light verb that gives زنگ زدن (to ring) and مهر زدن (to stamp).
- Present: من تگ میزنم (man tag mizanam)
- Past: من تگ زدم (man tag zadam)
- Imperative: تگم کن (tag-am kon, tag me, colloquial), تگ بزن (tag bezan)
- Negation: تگ نزدم (tag nazadam)
The person being tagged attaches with را or رو, or is suffixed as a possessive pronoun: maman-am ro tag zadam (I tagged my mom).

Why zadan and not kardan
Persian’s verbal aspect logic shows up clearly here. The act of tagging is a single discrete event: tap, select, done. Persian زدن covers exactly that aspectual shape, the percussive single-instance action. Compare with the durative actions that take کردن: پست کردن (composing and publishing takes time), سیو کردن (storing). The same pattern explains لایک زدن, اسکرین شات زدن, and هشتگ زدن, all gesture-shaped, all on زدن.
Where it comes from
Tag is English, naturalized into Persian through Facebook in the late 2000s and Instagram in the 2010s. زدن is native Persian, from Middle Persian zatan, with deep Iranian roots. The verb is now invisible-loan: Iranians use it without consciously perceiving it as English.
