هشتگ زدن

What it means

هشتگ زدن (hashtag-zadan) means to add a hashtag to a post, typing the # sign followed by a keyword to make the post discoverable under that tag. Iranians هشتگ می‌زنند on Instagram, Twitter (X), and Telegram channels. The verb is everyday, low-effort, and uncontroversial.

Iranian Gen Z has separately built a different word from the same root: هشتگ‌شناس (hashtag-shenās, a hashtag-knower), used semi-jokingly for someone who knows which hashtags are trending and uses them strategically to grow an account. Hashtag-zadan is the simple act. Hashtag-shenās is a personality type.

The Pure Persian Movement has no real alternative, because the hashtag as a concept did not exist in Persian before Twitter introduced it. The Farhangestan has occasionally proposed درشتنما (doroshtnamā, big-display) but no one uses it.

Compound verb structure

Hashtag-zadan uses زدن (zadan) for the same aspectual reason as tag-zadan and like-zadan: the action is a single instant, a discrete addition, a tap on the keyboard. Persian pairs gesture-shaped one-event actions with zadan rather than the durative kardan.

• Past: من هشتگ زدم (man hashtag zadam)
• Imperative: هشتگ بزن (hashtag bezan)
• Negation: هشتگ نزدم (hashtag nazadam)

Multiple hashtags can be attached with na taking the plural marker or by chaining: چند تا هشتگ بزن (chand tā hashtag bezan, add a few hashtags).

How to use it

chand tā hashtag bezan ke bishtar dideh beshe.

Add a few hashtags so it gets more views.

چند تا هشتگ بزن که بیشتر دیده بشه.

hashtag-e Tehran rā bezan, mardom bishtar peydā mikonand.

Use the Tehran hashtag, more people will find it.

هشتگ تهران را بزن، مردم بیشتر پیدا می‌کنند.

hashtag nazadam chon nemikhāstam too trend bāsham.

I didn’t add hashtags because I didn’t want to be in the trend.

The hashtag-shenās distinction

A separate Iranian internet word, هشتگ‌شناس (hashtag-shenās), names a person who is fluent in hashtag culture: which tags trend, which ones get you flagged, which ones get you followers. It is closer to a personality label than a verb. Hashtag-zadan is the action; hashtag-shenās is the identity. The shenās suffix (recognizer, knower) comes from شناختن (shenākhtan, to know, native Persian) and produces dozens of similar agentives: کارشناس (kārshenās, expert), زبان‌شناس (zabānshenās, linguist).

Where it comes from

Hashtag entered Persian through Twitter in roughly 2010, then proliferated via Instagram. The # symbol itself is universal across keyboards. زدن is native Persian, from Middle Persian zatan. The compound has been stable in Persian internet speech for over a decade.
