What it means
خفن (khafan) means “cool,” “sick,” “awesome,” “badass.” It is gen-Z and millennial slang, used to praise something impressive: a song, a goal in football, a film, a car, an outfit.
How to use it
- این آهنگ خیلی خفنه (in âhang kheyli khafane) “This song is so sick”
- یه بازی خفن دیدم (ye bâzi-ye khafan didam) “I saw a sick match”
- خفن بود (khafan bud) “It was awesome”

Register caution
Never say خفن to a boss, professor, in-law, or older relative. It will sound jarring or childish coming from an adult in a formal setting. Use it with friends, classmates, siblings, and on social media. In a job interview or formal email, swap for عالی (âli) or فوقالعاده (fowq-ol-âde).
Cultural note
خفن surged through Iranian youth speech in the 2010s, helped by rap, Telegram channels, and Instagram comments. Older speakers still find it slightly aggressive, since the root خفه (khafe) means “suffocated” or “choked.” The slang sense flipped the negative root into a praise term, similar to English “sick” or “killer.”
