خفن surged through Iranian youth speech in the 2010s, helped by rap, Telegram channels, and Instagram comments. Older speakers still find it slightly aggressive, since the root خفه (khafe) means "suffocated" or "choked." The slang sense flipped the negative root into a praise term, similar to English "sick" or "killer."

How it's used

khafan emerged from Tehran youth/skater slang in the early 2000s and went nationwide via Telegram and Instagram. Now used across all major cities; older speakers may not know it.
