/ dâqun /
interjection · wrecked / messed up / awesome
Meaning
معنی۱
Using daghoon as praise marks the speaker as fluent in the post-2015 internet register. Older Tehranis still hear it as "broken" and get worried. Younger Tehranis hear it as either depending on whether the speaker is laughing. Diaspora Iranians often miss the flip entirely and use only the literal sense, which is itself a marker. The word also has a quiet political shading: in the post-Mahsa years, declaring yourself daghoon (in the exhausted sense) was a way of acknowledging the collective cost of two years of crackdowns without saying anything that would get you arrested.
