چیز

What it means

چیز (chiz) means thing, object, stuff, or matter. It is the general-purpose word for any object or concept when a more specific name is not used or not known. چیز functions like the English word “thing” in its broadest sense: a physical object (یه چیزی رو زمینه، something is on the floor), an abstract matter (این چیز مهمیه، this is an important thing or matter), or an indefinite placeholder when a word escapes you mid-sentence. The phrase یه چیزی (ye chizi) means something or a certain thing, while هیچ چیز (hich chiz) means nothing. چیز is also the base for the compound چیزی نیست (chizi nist), literally “it is nothing,” used to say it’s nothing or never mind. In colloquial speech the word is often extended with the suffix ی to form یه چیزی, which softens or vaguens the reference.

• یه چیزی بهت بگم؟ (ye chizi behet begam?) “Can I tell you something?”
• این چیزه چیه؟ (in chize chiye?) “What is this thing?”
• چیزی نگو، من میدونم (chizi nagu, man midunam) “Don’t say anything, I know.”
• از این چیزا خوشم نمیاد (az in chizâ khosh-am nemiyâd) “I don’t like these kinds of things.”

Cultural note

چیزه (chize, with a light schwa at the end) is the go-to filler word in spoken Persian, filling the same role as “um” or “whatchamacallit” in English. Iranians use it mid-sentence when searching for a word, or as a placeholder when they want to gesture toward something without naming it precisely. Recognizing چیزه as a hesitation filler rather than a meaningful noun is one of those listening skills that dramatically improves your ability to follow fast, natural Persian speech.
