What it means

راستی (râsti) is built from راست (râst), a pure Persian word meaning straight, true, or right, combined with the suffix ی (-i) that forms abstract nouns and adverbs. The word has two closely related uses. In everyday spoken Persian its most frequent role is as a discourse marker meaning “by the way” or “oh, I just remembered,” used when the speaker wants to introduce a new topic or something that just came to mind. In this function it is equivalent to the English “actually” or “by the way” at the start of a sentence. In a more literal or formal register, راستی also means truth, honesty, or genuineness, as in the phrase راستی راستی (râsti râsti), which means “for real” or “genuinely” and is used to emphasize that something is true and not a joke or exaggeration.

• راستی، یادم رفت بهت بگم (râsti, yâdam raft behet begam) “By the way, I forgot to tell you.”
• راستی راستی داری جدی میگی؟ (râsti râsti dâri jeddi migi?) “Are you genuinely serious right now?”

Cultural note

As a discourse marker, راستی is one of the most natural-sounding features of colloquial Tehran Persian. When learners use it correctly at the start of a sentence, it immediately signals familiarity with spoken Farsi rather than textbook Farsi. The doubled form راستی راستی functions as an intensifier and is especially common among younger speakers and in informal texting. It is also one of the words that shows how Persian shifts a single form between a grammatical word (discourse marker) and a content word (truth) without changing shape, which can confuse learners who encounter it in both contexts.
