What it means
راستگویی (râstguyi) is a pure Persian compound noun formed from راست (râst, meaning straight, right, or true) and گویی (guyi, derived from گفتن, to speak, meaning the act of speaking). Together they mean honesty or truthfulness, specifically the habit or quality of speaking the truth. It is slightly more formal than the everyday phrase حرف راست زدن (harf-e râst zadan, to tell the truth) and has a moral, character-describing quality. A close synonym is صداقت (sedâqat), which is an Arabic loanword and is perhaps even more common in everyday speech; راستگویی is used when emphasizing the behavioral pattern rather than the abstract quality.

Cultural note
Truthfulness is a central virtue in Persian ethical thinking, anchored in the ancient Zoroastrian triad of good thought, good word, and good deed. The emphasis on the word (goftar) in that triad gives راستگویی a near-sacred status in traditional Persian moral discourse. Paradoxically, Persian social etiquette also includes تعارف (ta’ârof), an elaborate system of polite insistence and ritual understatement that can appear to conflict with blunt truth-telling. Speakers navigate between sincere راستگویی and socially required تعارف depending on context.
