What it means
واقعاً (vaghean) means “really,” “truly,” or “genuinely.” It comes from Arabic: واقع (vaqe) is an active participle from the root و-ق-ع (v-q-e), meaning “to occur” or “to be actual,” and the adverbial tanwin suffix -an produces the adverb “in actuality” or “truly.” Persian adopted both the word and the suffix pattern. In everyday speech vaghean works exactly like English “really”: it can intensify an adjective, confirm a statement, or express surprise. A near synonym is راستی (rasti, “truly,” of Persian origin), though vaghean is far more common in conversation.

- واقعاً ممنون. (vaghean mamnun.) “I am truly grateful.”

- این واقعاً خوب بود. (in vaghean khub bud.) “This was really good.”

Vaghean is one of the most versatile words in spoken Persian. Iranians use it as a single-word question, “vaghean?” (Really?), to express surprise or mild disbelief, much like English speakers do. It also appears at the start of sentences to signal sincerity, where a speaker wants to make clear they are being serious rather than polite. Because it is A2-level and used across all registers, mastering vaghean and its intonation patterns is an early but significant step toward sounding natural in Persian.
