What it means
در واقع (dar vâqe) means “in fact,” “actually,” or “in reality.” It is a prepositional phrase used as a discourse marker. The first element is the Persian preposition در (dar, in), and the second is واقع (vâqe), from Arabic وَاقِع (waqi’, that which has occurred, reality, fact). Together the phrase means “in what is real” or “in actual fact.” It is used to introduce a truth that corrects, qualifies, or sharpens what was just said. A close synonym is راستش (râstash, truthfully or actually), which is more colloquial. در واقع is neutral in register and works in both conversation and formal writing.

در واقع is one of the most versatile discourse markers in Persian. It can open a sentence to frame a clarification, sit mid-sentence to add nuance, or stand almost as a filler when a speaker is gathering their thoughts. In spoken Tehran Persian it sometimes appears alongside واقعاً (vâq’an, really, truly), a related but distinct word that shifts the meaning toward emphasis rather than correction. Iranians also use راستش (râstash) and اصلاً (aslan) to mark corrections and clarifications, so learners benefit from recognizing the full set. The combination of a native Persian preposition with a deeply embedded Arabic noun is typical of how Persian formed its most common discourse connectors.
