What it means
نمیشه (nemishe) is the negation of میشه, the spoken Tehrani 3rd-person-singular present of شدن. It means “it does not become,” “it is not possible,” or simply “no, that won’t work.” Standalone, نمیشه is one of the most common one-word answers to a request that cannot be fulfilled. Iranians use it for both the literal sense (a transformation that fails to happen) and the impersonal sense (a plan, an action, an arrangement that simply cannot work in current circumstances).

Spoken vs written
Spoken Tehrani: نمیشه (nemishe). Formal-written: نمیشود (nemishavad). The reduction follows the same -avad to -e shift as میشه, with the negation prefix نـ attached. Use نمیشود in essays, official letters, and formal speech. Use نمیشه in any casual context, including text messages, voice notes, taxis, and home conversation. The formal version is rarely heard out loud, even from speakers who use a polished register otherwise. The single-word answer نمیشه is so embedded in spoken Persian that it functions almost as a discourse marker: it closes a topic, signals the speaker is done weighing options, and invites the other party to pivot.
Cultural note
Standalone نمیشه is the great Iranian shrug. A taxi driver hits a closed road and says نمیشه. A cousin asks if you can drive across town in fifteen minutes during rush hour and you say نمیشه. The word is frank without being rude, since it points at the situation rather than the asker. For softer refusals, Iranians pair it with a hedge: نمیشه والا (“honestly, it’s not possible”) or نمیشه دیگه (“it’s just not happening”). For harder refusals, the bare نمیشه does the job. Older speakers also stretch the vowel for emphasis (نمیـشه), which signals more genuine regret than the snappy version. Reading those small distinctions is part of what makes spoken Persian feel alive. Pair نمیشه with a sigh and a hand gesture and you have the full Tehran-style refusal, complete and self-explanatory in under two seconds.
