A polite Iranian dodge to a hard question is نمی‌دونم والا ("I really don't know"), with the والا signaling sincerity. Pair it with a shrug and a soft smile and you have one of the most-used verbal moves in Tehran. Learners who never adopt the spoken form end up sounding stiff in exactly the conversations where Persian wants to be most relaxed. The phrase also appears in a thoughtful pause register: a speaker says نمی‌دونم and trails off, signaling they need a moment to think rather than that they truly do not know.
