What it means

ترند شدن (trend-shodan) means to become trending, to rise onto the public trending list on X, Instagram, or any platform that surfaces such a list. The verb describes the moment a hashtag, a phrase, a name, or a topic crosses the threshold from private circulation into mass visibility. Iranian users use the verb daily, and they use it strategically: they ask whether something is trending, they push to make something trend, they argue about whether a trend is organic or manufactured.

Register is colloquial-to-neutral. The verb is heavily used by activist accounts, journalists, and politically engaged Gen Z users.

Compound verb structure

ترند شدن uses the light verb شدن (shodan, to become), the Persian light verb that marks a change of state. Persian distinguishes carefully between کردن (kardan, to do, active), زدن (zadan, to hit, percussive), دادن (dadan, to give, transmissive), and شدن (shodan, to become, change of state). The hashtag does not do trending; it becomes trending. The verb is intransitive.

  • Present: ترند می‌شود (trend mishavad), colloquial ترند می‌شه (trend mishe)
  • Past: ترند شد (trend shod, it trended)
  • Subjunctive: که ترند بشه (ke trend besheh, that it trend)
  • Negation: ترند نشد (trend nashod, it did not trend)

The active counterpart would be ترند کردن (trend-kardan, to make something trend), but in Persian internet speech the passive-change form ترند شدن is the dominant one. You talk about whether the hashtag trended, not about who made it trend, even when the engineering is obvious.

How Iranian Gen Z engineers trend-shodan

Iranian users have built a small science around ترند شدن. After the September 2022 killing of Mahsa Amini in Tehran morality-police custody, the hashtag #مهسا_امینی and its transliteration #MahsaAmini were pushed onto the global X trend list through coordinated activist effort: Telegram channels distributed the hashtag, diaspora accounts in Europe and North America amplified during their peak hours, and within twenty-four hours the hashtag had crossed two million uses. It became one of the most-tweeted Persian hashtags in history. The Iranian state’s media response was to label it manufactured, but the engineering was real, and so was the underlying grief and rage that fed it.

Similar patterns power smaller trends every week: a labor strike, an environmental disaster, an executed prisoner. Iranian Gen Z treats ترند شدن as a civic tool, the closest thing to a national microphone available to people who cannot publish freely.

In our voice

If a learner wants to understand how Iranian internet activism works, ترند شدن is one of the verbs to live inside. The act it names is half technical and half political. Iranian Gen Z has turned it into a craft.
