The word marks a specific Iranian Gen Z position: skeptical of the diaspora, skeptical of social-media activism that doesn't translate into anything offline, skeptical of the algorithm-driven version of solidarity. It does not mean the speaker is anti-protest; it means the speaker is anti-tourist. Tehran-based users wield hashtag-shenâs against Iranian-Americans who give them strategic advice. Diaspora users wield it against each other to police seriousness inside their own circles. The word is generational: older diaspora activists rarely use it about themselves.
