همین

What it means

همین (hamin) is formed from هم (ham, same/also) and این (in, this), giving it the sense of “this very,” “exactly this,” or “right this one.” It focuses attention with an insistence that plain این (this) lacks. همین الان (hamin alân) means “right now, this very moment.” همین رو می‌خوام (hamin ro mikhâm) means “I want this exact one.” The word can also carry mild impatience or finality: همین دیگه (hamin digeh) signals “that’s it, nothing more, end of discussion.” Its counterpart همان (hamân) functions identically but points to something more distant or already established: “that very one.”

How to use it

• همین رو بده (hamin ro bede) “Give me this one, this exact one.”
• همین الان بیا (hamin alân biâ) “Come right now.”
• همین جاست (hamin jâst) “It’s right here / it’s in this very spot.”
• آره، همین (âre, hamin) “Yeah, that’s the one / exactly.”

Cultural note

همین is a precision tool in Persian conversation. When an Iranian says همین, they are cutting off ambiguity: not approximately this, not something like this, but this exact thing. It shows up heavily in directions (همین خیابون, hamin khiâbun, this very street), in decisions (همینو می‌خوام, hamino mikhâm, I want exactly this one), and in storytelling to highlight the exact moment something happened (همین موقع بود که, hamin mowghe bud ke, it was right at that moment that). The word rewards attention because missing it can make you think a speaker is more emphatic than you realized.
