همان

What it means

همان (hamân) is a pure Persian determiner and pronoun built from هم (ham, same, also) and ان (ân, that), giving it the sense of “that very same” or “the exact one.” It points back to something already mentioned and confirms identity with precision: همون (hamun) is the colloquial spoken form you will hear constantly, while همان is the standard written and more careful spoken form. The word can modify a noun directly (همان روز, that very day) or stand alone as a pronoun (همونه, that is the one). A related form is همین (hamin, this very same), which points to something closer. Together they form a pair that Iranians use to be exact without elaborating.

How to use it

• همون چیزیه که می‌خواستم (hamun chiziyeh ke mikhâstam) “That is exactly what I wanted.”
• همان روز برگشت (hamân ruz bargasht) “He came back that very same day.”
• همونه، اشتباه نیست (hamune, eshtebâh nist) “That is the one, no mistake.”
• با همون آدم حرف زدم (bâ hamun âdam harf zadam) “I spoke with that same person.”

Cultural note

In spoken Persian the distinction between همان and همون is purely register. In writing and careful speech you say همان; in everyday conversation almost everyone says همون. The word is useful precisely because it avoids repetition while still being emphatic. When Iranians want to confirm or insist, همون! or همانه! (that is it, exactly that) functions as a short, firm agreement, similar to English “exactly” or “that is the one.” It is also used to gently correct a misunderstanding: نه، همون اولیه (no, it is that first one).
