HAM
too / also
A1 — Absolute Beginner

What it means

هم (ham) means “too,” “also,” or “as well.” It is one of the most frequent words in Persian, used at every level of formality, and it traces back to Old Persian hama, meaning “same” or “together.” It is the default word an Iranian speaker reaches for to add or confirm a point. Its more formal synonyms are نیز (niz) and همچنین (hamchenin). هم can follow a noun or pronoun closely (منم هم، اونم هم) or stand between two clauses, giving it great flexibility in spoken Persian.

How to use it

  • منم هم میام. (manam ham miyâm) “I’m coming too.”
  • چایی هم میخوای؟ (châyi ham mikhây?) “Do you want tea as well?”
  • هم خوشمزه بود هم ارزون. (ham khoshmaze bud ham arzun) “It was both tasty and cheap.”
  • اونم هم فارسی بلده. (unam ham fârsi balde) “He knows Persian too.”

Cultural note

هم is so versatile that it doubles as a coordinating conjunction when repeated: هم…هم means “both…and.” This construction is very common in everyday Persian and avoids the more formal همچنین pattern. Children learn هم among their first words, and it remains the go-to additive particle across all ages, regions, and registers. Choosing نیز over هم in conversation is a conscious stylistic decision that carries a formal or literary flavour.
