What it means
همینطور (hamintor) means “likewise,” “in the same way,” or “and also” in everyday spoken Persian. It looks and feels like a native Persian word, but طور (towr, “manner, way”) is borrowed from Arabic (طَوْر), the same element found in چطور (chetor, “how”) and اینطور (intor, “like this”). The همین part is native Persian (“this very”). The combination gives a word that is deeply embedded in colloquial speech, serving as the everyday counterpart to the formal همچنین (hamchenin). Speakers use it to add a parallel point or confirm that something applies equally.
How to use it
- من برم، تو همینطور. (man beram, to hamintor) “I’ll go, and you likewise.”
- اون خوب بود، همینطور فیلمش. (oon khub bud, hamintor filmash) “He was good, and so was his film.”
- همینطور که گفتم، کارا تموم شده. (hamintor ke goftam, kârâ tamum shode) “Just as I said, the work is done.”
- خوشحال شدم، همینطور خانوادم. (khoshhâl shodam, hamintor khânevâdam) “I was happy, and so was my family.”
Cultural note
همینطور is one of the most natural connectors in spoken Persian and appears constantly in everyday conversation. It can express agreement, add a parallel fact, or confirm that an action applies to someone else too. In Tehran informal speech it sometimes contracts further to همینجور (haminjur). The register gap between همینطور and همچنین is a good guide: choosing the right one signals whether you are speaking or writing, casual or formal.
