What it means
یهو (yeho) means “suddenly” or “all of a sudden” and is one of the most characteristic words of colloquial Tehran Persian. It is a phonetic contraction of یک هو (yek ho), where یک means “one” and هو refers to a breath or a moment in older Persian usage. Over time yek ho compressed into یههو and then یهو in fast speech. It sits at the informal end of the spectrum: the formal literary equivalent is ناگهان (nâgahân) and the somewhat more neutral spoken option is یکدفعه (yek-daf’e). You will almost never see یهو in written Persian outside dialogue, subtitles, or social media captions.
How to use it
- یهو چراغا رفت. (yeho cheraghâ raft.) “Suddenly the lights went out.”
- یهو یه فکری زد به سرم. (yeho ye fekri zad be saram.) “All of a sudden an idea hit me.”
- داشتم راه میرفتم که یهو زمین خوردم. (dashtam raah miraftam ke yeho zamin khordam.) “I was walking when suddenly I fell.”
- یهو گفت: دیگه نمیام. (yeho goft: dige nemiyâm.) “Out of nowhere he said: I’m not coming anymore.”
Cultural note
یهو is such a reliable marker of informal speech that screenwriters and novelists use it deliberately to signal a character’s class or intimacy level. It appears constantly in Persian comedy shows, YouTube vlogs, and everyday WhatsApp voice notes. Hearing یهو in formal news broadcasting would be jarring, the way “all of a sudden” sounds natural in conversation but out of place in a written report. If you want to sound natural talking to Iranians under 40, learning یهو is more useful than memorizing ناگهان.
