What it means
چیه (chiye) is the spoken-Tehrani contraction of چی است (chi-ast), “what is.” It functions as the everyday “what is” or “what’s the matter” question word at the end of a clause. Pronounced with two syllables, chee-yeh.
How to use it
- این چیه؟ (in chiye?) “what is this?”
- اسمت چیه؟ (esmet chiye?) “what’s your name?”
- چیه؟ چرا اخم کردی؟ (chiye? cherâ akhm kardi?) “what is it? why are you frowning?”
Formal pair
The written/formal counterpart is چیست (chist), the contraction of chi-ast in classical Persian. So in chist? (“what is this?”) is the textbook form. You will see chist in news headlines, official forms, and any printed material aimed at a serious register, but speaking it aloud sounds archaic, like saying “whither” in English. In conversation, always chiye. The plural “what are these” is in-â chi-an? (in spoken) vs in-hâ chist-and? (in formal).
Cultural note
A bare چیه؟ (chiye?) on its own carries attitude. Said softly to a moping friend it means “what’s wrong?” Said sharply to someone staring at you on the metro it means “what’s your problem?” Tone of voice and eye contact do all the work. Iranian parents use it constantly: chiye azizam? (“what is it, dear?”) to a crying child.
