What it means
آمریکا (Âmrikâ) is the Persian name for the United States of America, and in everyday speech it almost always refers specifically to the US rather than the American continents as a whole. The name comes from the Latinized version of “Amerigo,” the first name of the Italian explorer Amerigo Vespucci, whose voyages led European cartographers to label the continents after him in 1507. A more formal and precise term in Persian is ایالات متحده آمریکا (Iyâlât-e Mottahede-ye Âmrikâ), meaning the United States of America, but in conversation آمریکا on its own is standard.
How to use it
- خیلی از ایرانیها تو آمریکا زندگی میکنن. (Kheyli az Irânihâ tu Âmrikâ zendegi mikonan.) “A lot of Iranians live in America.”
- آمریکا چند تا ایالت داره؟ (Âmrikâ chand tâ iyâlat dâre?) “How many states does America have?”
- فیلمهای آمریکایی رو دوست دارم. (Filmhâ-ye Âmrikâyi ro dust dâram.) “I like American movies.”
- اون داره واسه ویزای آمریکا درخواست میده. (Un dâre vâse vizâ-ye Âmrikâ darkhâst mide.) “She is applying for an American visa.”
Cultural note
آمریکا occupies a complex place in Iranian culture. Politically, Iran and the United States have had a tense relationship since 1979, and the phrase آمریکا in official Iranian media often carries a critical tone. In everyday conversation, however, many Iranians distinguish between the government and the people, and American pop culture, films, and music have maintained a wide following inside Iran. The large Iranian-American community, especially in Los Angeles (nicknamed “Tehrangeles”), is a vivid example of the deep personal ties that exist alongside political tensions.
