ته دل خوشحال بودن (tah-e del khoshhâl budan) is a quiet, lovely idiom. Literally “to be happy at the bottom of the heart.” Figuratively it names a private, deep contentment that lives under the surface, not the loud kind that needs an audience.
The literal meaning
Word for word: ته (tah) bottom or floor, دل (del) heart, خوشحال (khoshhâl) happy, بودن (budan) to be. The phrase pictures the heart as a vessel with layers, and locates the happiness at the lowest, most settled layer. The bottom of the heart in Persian is the most honest part, the part that does not perform. So a happiness that lives there is one that does not need to be announced. It is the joy that survives even when your face stays neutral.
The figurative meaning
You are quietly, deeply happy. Maybe a long-anticipated thing finally happened, or someone you love is doing well, or your private life is calmer than it has been in years. You are not jumping up and down. You are not posting it. You are walking around with a small steady warmth that nobody else can see. Iranians treat this kind of happiness with respect. It is considered the most real version, less vulnerable to the evil eye, less performative. Older relatives often say of someone whose external life looks ordinary: ته دلش خوشحاله, the bottom of his heart is happy. It is a generous and observant thing to notice in another person.
