What it means
دلم آب شد (delam âb shod) literally means “my heart melted, turned to water.” Figuratively it expresses either intense anxiety (worry-melted) or wave-of-relief (gratitude-melted), depending on what comes around it.

How to use it
- تا برسی دلم آب شد (tâ beresi delam âb shod) “I was sick with worry until you arrived”
- وقتی دیدمش دلم آب شد (vaghti didamesh delam âb shod) “When I saw him my heart melted (with relief or love)”
- از نگرانی دلم آب شد (az negarâni delam âb shod) “I melted from worry”
The literal meaning
دلم (delam, my heart) + آب شد (âb shod, became water). “My heart became water.” In Persian, دل is the seat of emotion, closer to the English “heart” but more tied to the gut and viscera.
The figurative meaning
Speakers mean their heart “melted” from intensity, the way a candle melts. With نگرانی (worry) it leans anxious. With seeing a loved one safely home, it leans relief. Both are valid, both are colloquial.
When you’d say it
Your child is two hours late from school and finally walks in. You hug them and say تا برسی دلم آب شد.
Cultural note
Persian has a whole family of دل (del) idioms tracking emotional weather: دلم گرفته (delam gerefte, I’m down), دلم تنگ شده (delam tang shode, I miss you), دلم میخواد (delam mikhâd, I want). The دل is treated as a living thing that swells, melts, breaks, and tightens.
