What it means
متأسفانه (mota’sefâne) is a sentence-level adverb meaning unfortunately or regrettably. It is built from the Arabic root أ-س-ف (a-s-f), which carries the meaning of grief, regret, or sorrow. The adjective متأسف (mota’sef) means sorry or regretful, and adding the Persian adverbializing suffix ـانه (âne) gives the adverb unfortunately. The first-person form متأسفم (mota’sefam) is the standard polite phrase for I am sorry or I regret that, used in formal apologies and in everyday expressions of sympathy. Unlike ببخشید (bebakhshid, pardon me / excuse me), which asks for forgiveness, متأسفم expresses personal regret or condolence without requesting anything in return.
How to use it
- متأسفانه نمیتونم بیام (mota’sefâne nemitunam biâm) “Unfortunately I cannot come.”
- متأسفم که دیر شد (mota’sefam ke dir shod) “I am sorry it is late.”
- متأسفانه خبر بدی دارم (mota’sefâne khabar-e badi dâram) “Unfortunately I have bad news.”
- از این موضوع متأسفم (az in mowzu mota’sefam) “I am sorry about this matter.”
Cultural note
Iranians make a practical distinction between ببخشید (bebakhshid), which covers incidental apologies like bumping into someone or interrupting, and متأسفم, which signals deeper, more sincere regret. Saying متأسفم at a condolence call or when delivering genuinely bad news is expected and carries weight. Using ببخشید in those contexts can sound inappropriately casual. The adverb متأسفانه is also the go-to opener in formal letters and official communications when conveying rejection or bad news, so learners encounter it quickly in written Persian as well.
