What it means
حال کردن (hâl kardan) is a colloquial idiom meaning “to enjoy, to have a blast, to vibe with.” It uses the noun حال (hâl, “mood/state,” Arabic loan) and the light verb کردن (kardan, “to do”).
Casual register only. Not for formal writing.
How to use it
- خیلی حال کردم (kheyli hâl kardam) “I had a blast”
- با این آهنگ حال میکنم (bâ in âhang hâl mikonam) “I’m vibing with this song”
- حال کردی؟ (hâl kardi?) “Did you have fun?”
The literal meaning
Word for word: “to do mood” or “to do state.” حال is a borrowed Arabic noun for one’s current condition or feeling. Pairing it with کردن treats the mood as something you actively perform.
The figurative meaning
Speakers mean “to enjoy something thoroughly, to be into it.” Closer to English “vibing,” “loving it,” or “having a blast.” Can be used for music, food, an experience, even a person you click with.
When you’d say it
Walking out of a great concert, your friend asks how it was. You grin and say خیلی حال کردم.
Cultural note
Hâl kardan is everywhere in Tehran youth slang. Pre-revolution it had risqué undertones, but today it is fully mainstream casual. Older or formal speakers prefer لذت بردن (lezzat bordan, “to take pleasure”) in writing.
